GST vs VAT — India vs World

India's GST (Goods and Services Tax) is structurally similar to VAT (Value Added Tax) used in the UK (20%), Germany (19% MwSt), Australia (10% GST), Canada (5% federal GST + provincial), and UAE (5% VAT). All are consumption taxes collected at each stage of the supply chain with input tax credit. India's GST replaced 17 separate central and state taxes in 2017, unifying the country into a single market.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What are the new GST slabs in India 2026?
After the GST 2.0 reform effective September 22, 2025, India now has: 0% (exempt essentials — dairy, medicines, fresh food), 5% (essential goods — packaged foods, basic household items, healthcare services), 18% (standard rate — electronics, most services, consumer goods), 40% (luxury and sin goods — premium cars, tobacco, aerated drinks). Gold and gems remain at 3%. The old 12% and 28% slabs are removed.
How to calculate 18% GST?
To add 18% GST: multiply base price by 1.18. Example: ₹1,000 × 1.18 = ₹1,180 (GST = ₹180). To remove from MRP: divide by 1.18. Example: ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. CGST = 9%, SGST = 9% for intra-state sales.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
For intra-state sales (within same state): GST splits equally — CGST (Central) + SGST (State). For 18% GST: CGST = 9%, SGST = 9%. For interstate sales: IGST = 18% goes entirely to the Centre and is later apportioned. Toggle "Interstate Sale" in our calculator to see IGST breakdown.
Is GST included in MRP?
Yes. In India, MRP always includes GST. Use the "Remove GST" option to find the base price before tax. Example: If MRP is ₹590 with 18% GST, base price = ₹590 ÷ 1.18 = ₹500.
What happened to 12% and 28% GST slabs?
The 56th GST Council meeting on September 3, 2025 merged these slabs under GST 2.0. Most items previously at 12% moved to 5% or 18%. Most 28% items moved to 18% or the new 40% luxury rate. You can still enter 12% or 28% as a custom rate for transitional use cases.
